Byzantine Art

A Brush With Greatness GlossaryA Brush With Greatness Glossary
Early art of the Christian, Eastern Roman Empire. Intended as religious lessons, Byzantine paintings and mosaics were simple, and meant mostly to teach Christian lessons. Because of this, the figures tend to appear flat, stiff and floating, with disproportionately large eyes. Backgrounds are usually golden toned, while the subject matter is characterized by a rich use of color.
