Ashcan School
A group of early twentieth-century American artists who painted pictures of city life. Alleys, tenements, and slum dwellers were their choice of subject matter, which led a critic to dub the artists the Ashcan School. This label is also used for another group-- The Eight. The Ashcan School included these six members of The Eight: Arthur B. Davies, Robert Henri, George Luks, William Glackens, John Sloan, and Everett Shinn. George Wesley Bellows and Edward Hopper are also considered to be in the Ashcan School.
